The Government of Zambia has confirmed that Thursday, August 13, 2026, is a public holiday for both public and private sectors, giving citizens the opportunity to vote.
A Constitutional Requirement
The government has reminded all employers and members of the public that Thursday, August 13, 2026, is a Public Holiday in accordance with Article 56(2) of the Constitution of Zambia, applying to both the public and private sectors. Employers are expected to observe the holiday and afford eligible employees the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
Institutions responsible for essential services have been directed to put in place appropriate arrangements to ensure continuity of service while still facilitating employees’ participation in the vote.
Guidance for Employers and Staff
Staff who may need to travel ahead of polling day have been advised to make necessary arrangements with their employers, including applying for leave where required. The statement clarified that only August 13, 2026 is designated as a public holiday. Government has called on all employers in both the public and private sectors to comply with the declaration and facilitate the orderly participation of their employees in voting, while maintaining uninterrupted essential services.
