The Electoral Commission of Zambia has clarified that Keembe East Constituency was read out twice during Sunday’s results updates because the same announcement script was mistakenly reused, not because of any error in the underlying data or a duplicated constituency count.
An Official Explanation
ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis said Keembe East was read twice because the script used was the same copy, and confirmed the repeat does not affect the Commission’s consolidated national results. She noted that the confusion coincided with the announcement of a separate constituency, Keembe West, also in Chibombo District, Central Province, whose results were declared around the same time.
In Keembe West, President Hakainde Hichilema (UPND) polled 8,376 votes, while NRPUP candidate Brian Mundubile received 611 votes.
What This Means for the Count
With the clarification now on record, Keembe East and Keembe West are confirmed as two distinct constituencies, each counted once toward the national total. The earlier concern that Keembe East’s results had been counted twice, which would have artificially inflated the national tally, has been addressed by ECZ’s explanation.
TGN Zambia has updated its constituency tracker to reflect both results as separate, verified entries.
