The Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance has written to the African Union seeking urgent intervention in Zambia’s post-election dispute, citing findings from the EU observer mission and warning the petition deadline is just two days away.
An Appeal Beyond Zambia’s Courts
The letter, signed by Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba on behalf of the Alliance and presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, referenced findings from the European Union’s observer mission, which reported reduced verification of digital results against paper tally sheets following the mid-count suspension, and described a heavy military presence it said intimidated participants at some totalling centres. The Alliance stressed the legal urgency, noting that under Article 101 of the Constitution, a petition must be filed within seven days of the declaration.
The Alliance clarified it was not asking the AU to declare it the winner, but was requesting urgent action before the domestic filing deadline expired. The Alliance separately accused the state of subjecting its officials to harassment, detention, arrests and raids intended to prevent the petition from being properly organised, describing the actions as an attack on the country’s multi-party character.
