Zambia Marks Farmers’ Day 2026 Under Theme “Inclusive Economic Development”

Zambia observes Farmers’ Day today under the theme “Inclusive Economic Development,” a public holiday celebrating the contribution of farmers to the nation’s economy.

A Theme Centred on Shared Growth

Zambia marks Farmers’ Day today under the theme “Inclusive Economic Development,” a public holiday held every first Monday of August to recognise the role farmers play in sustaining the nation’s economy. The theme reflects a continued national push to ensure that agricultural growth translates into broad-based economic benefits, reaching smallholder farmers, rural communities and commercial producers alike, rather than concentrating gains among a narrow segment of the sector.

Agriculture contributes close to a fifth of Zambia’s GDP and remains the primary source of livelihood for the majority of Zambians. With less than a fifth of the country’s arable land currently under cultivation, the sector is widely regarded as holding significant untapped capacity to drive the kind of inclusive growth this year’s theme highlights, particularly as Zambia continues efforts to diversify its economy away from historical dependence on copper exports.

Recognising Farmers’ Contribution

Farmers’ Day is typically marked by public holiday closures across banks, schools and government offices, giving farming communities a moment of national recognition and rest. This year’s “Inclusive Economic Development” theme places added emphasis on ensuring smallholder farmers and rural communities are active participants in, and beneficiaries of, Zambia’s broader economic transformation agenda.

TGN Zambia joins the nation in celebrating the farmers whose work continues to feed the country and anchor its inclusive growth ambitions.
