A group of retired senior military officers, clergy, academics and civil society figures has issued a joint statement condemning escalating pre-election violence and calling for peaceful, free and fair polls on August 13.
A Warning from Zambia’s Elders
The statement, signed by nine prominent figures including retired Lieutenant General Paul Mihova, retired Brigadier General Chapula, Bishop Paul Bupe, and governance activist Brebner Changala, expressed deep concern over a marked escalation in violence tied to the current pre-election period, citing incidents across Western, North-Western, Southern and Lusaka provinces that have in some cases resulted in loss of life.
The signatories noted that Zambia has held numerous elections demonstrating the resilience of its democratic traditions, and that past isolated incidents of electoral violence had consistently been contained and condemned. They warned against Zambia following a more destructive path seen elsewhere on the continent, arguing that political differences should be settled through dialogue rather than intimidation.
Four Calls to Action
The group made four specific appeals: that political parties and their supporters exercise restraint; that law enforcement act impartially and hold perpetrators accountable regardless of affiliation; that the Electoral Commission continue promoting a transparent process; and that ordinary citizens remain calm and respect differing political views. The statement closed by expressing hope for an election that reflects the will of the Zambian people while preserving the country’s democratic legacy.
