University of Zambia students have awarded UNZASU President Mwanto Kabaso a symbolic Ballon d’Or in recognition of achievements during his tenure, including a recent increase in student accommodation allowances.
Recognition for a Historic Tenure
University of Zambia students have honoured UNZASU President Mwanto Kabaso, popularly known as “Shuwa Shuwa,” with a symbolic Ballon d’Or, crediting him with several milestones achieved during his leadership. Chief among them is the recent increase in student accommodation allowances from K3,900 to K5,850, approved by President Hakainde Hichilema following a visit to State House last Saturday.
Kabaso has become the first UNZASU president to lead students to State House twice within a single year, with the latest visit marking the occasion where the accommodation allowance increase was announced for students on government loans.
Milestones Behind the Honour
Students also pointed to other achievements behind the award, including the rehabilitation of UNZA’s sewer and water network, described as the first major works of their kind in more than 60 years. Kabaso was further credited with championing the reintroduction of meal allowances for students during vacation periods, becoming the first UNZASU president to successfully push the initiative through.
Grace Bwalya, a Veterinary Medicine student, said that across her five years at UNZA, she has experienced the strongest student leadership under Kabaso’s presidency.
